Every once in a while, as a person who has covered the Toronto Maple Leafs for nine seasons, I want to sit back and say something positive about the team. Today, I want to say that Maple Leafs fans are lucky to have William Nylander. Seriously, it’s easy to miss just how good he is because he doesn’t always grab the spotlight, but make no mistake—he’s one of the best players on the team. Some people throw around “lackadaisical” about him, but that’s way off. Nylander works constantly on his game, always trying to get better, and he delivers when it counts. Here’s why he deserves more love.

Reason 1: Nylander Showcases Pure Offensive Skill

One thing I like about Nylander is that he can score. He’s not just putting up numbers; he makes plays, finds open ice, and finishes chances like few can. In his draft year, he was ranked ahead of guys like Draisaitl and Rantanen—that tells you something. Three 40-goal seasons and counting, and even this season, he has 21 goals, 58 points, and 100 shots on net through 46 games. Sure, he has the occasional defensive slip, but every great player does. The man can produce, and Leafs fans should recognize that.

Reason 2: Nylander Plays Second Fiddle Without Complaint

Auston Matthews is the best player in Maple Leafs history, so Nylander is usually playing second fiddle to Matthews, the team’s top star. And yet he doesn’t whine, sulk, or demand the spotlight. Coaches have moved him around, lines have changed, but he adapts. He works with what he’s given and still puts up big numbers. That’s a rare mix of skill and team-first attitude, and Maple Leafs fans should be appreciating it every night he’s on the ice.

Reason 3: Nylander Is Clutch on Special Teams and in Overtime

Nylander’s power-play work is a joy to watch. Two of his last three goals came with the man advantage, and he sees plenty of top-line ice. Even when the Maple Leafs are off their game as a team, Nylander keeps creating chances, keeping defenders honest, and making the team dangerous. That’s exactly the kind of player you want in critical situations.

Fans Should Appreciate Nylander More

At the end of the day, William Nylander is a talent that Maple Leafs fans should be celebrating. He’s skilled, hard-working, smart, and knows how to step up when it matters. If you’re focused on the occasional defensive mistake or want to call him “lackadaisical,” you’re missing the bigger picture. Nylander is a guy who makes this team better every time he’s on the ice, and that’s worth appreciating.
